Understanding DEI and Its Importance for Rural Texans
What is DEI anyway and why should we care?
As a Human Resources professional for close to 30 years, I want to break down for you what a DEI program is and why it is important to have in the workplace. The purpose of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs is to create workplaces where all employees feel valued, seen, and empowered. DEI programs help break down barriers to success and participation and create equal opportunities for all.
Key Components of DEI Programs:
Training: DEI programs include training that helps employees appreciate and value different perspectives. This can include cultural sensitivity training and unconscious bias training.
Resource Networks: These programs can include resource networks for underrepresented groups, such as women in leadership, young professionals, Black employees, Hispanic employees, and Military Veterans.
Recruitment Strategies: DEI programs include strategies to attract diverse candidates, such as partnering with diverse recruitment agencies.
Mentorship Programs: These programs promote inclusivity and establish meaningful connections between employees.
Customer Understanding: DEI programs help organizations better understand and meet the needs of a diverse customer base.
Team Inclusion: DEI programs make individuals feel like a valued part of the team, regardless of their backgrounds.
Encouraging Expression: DEI programs help employees feel encouraged to express their ideas and perspectives.
DEI programs have been around for decades, and their origins date back to the civil rights movement. We need these programs—they work, and we wholeheartedly support and foster these programs!
Why Should Rural Texans Care?
As rural Texans, we might wonder why DEI programs are relevant to us. The 134 PAC is dedicated to rebuilding long-abandoned infrastructures in rural Texas and emphasizes the importance of these programs for several reasons
Community Strength: DEI programs help build stronger, more inclusive communities where everyone feels valued and has the opportunity to succeed.
Economic Growth: By attracting diverse talent, DEI programs can drive economic growth and innovation in rural areas.
Educational Opportunities: DEI initiatives can provide educational resources and mentorship opportunities for underrepresented groups, helping to bridge gaps in education and employment.
Political Representation: Supporting DEI programs that align with the mission of The 134 PAC to advocate for the needs and challenges of rural Texans ensuring that all voices are heard and represented.
What Can We Do to Help?
Stay Informed: Educate yourself and others about the benefits of DEI programs and the potential impact of the Executive Order to halt these initiatives.
Advocate: Reach out to local representatives and express your support for DEI programs. Share your personal stories and the positive impact these programs have had on your community.
Support Organizations: Support organizations like The 134 PAC that are dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in rural Texas.
DEI programs are essential for creating inclusive, equitable workplaces and communities. The recent Executive Order to halt these programs is a step backward, it is giving permission to discriminate, it is basically saying "whites only" should apply...This is an attempt to remove qualified civil servants and replace them with Trump loyalists.
Let's keep working together and speaking up for Rural Texans!
